Westwood Lake walking trails

Westwood Lake Park is very popular with nature walkers, joggers, mountain bikers, swimmers, fishers, and kayakers. There is a 5.5-kilometre walking path around the lake, which is phenomenal for the old and young alike. Interwoven into the trees and hills, you'll find beginner and intermediate mountain biking trails that are well maintained throughout the year.

The beach at Westwood Lake has sandy shores, a playground for children, and even an off-leash dog park at the far end for you to enjoy daily. This lake is warm in the summer months and great for a quick swim to escape the seasonal heat. Make sure to bring your kayak and paddleboard as the calm waters around that lake are perfect for a peaceful paddle around the lake whenever you have time.

If you live to fish, look no further. Westwood Lake is well known for having hard-fighting Trout (Cutthroat & and Rainbow) and Smallmouth Bass, which can be caught throughout the year as the lake does not freeze over. At the access point to the lake, you'll find a well-maintained dock which is perfect for casting into the lake.

Morrell Nature Sanctuary

Beyond Westwood Lake Park area, to the south, you can explore into the Morell Nature Sanctuary. This nature reserve has fantastic old-growth trees, endless walking trails, and fairy doors for children to explore. Morelle Sanctuary is an excellent area to visit and learn about the flora and fauna that make this one of the most unique ecological regions on Vancouver Island.

West of Resort on the Lake, at the base of Westwood Lake, is Mount Benson. With an elevation fo over 3300 feet, this is a challenging hike that can take over 7 hours from start to finish (round-trip). On your walk, you see towering trees, babbling brooks and breathtaking waterfalls. This hike can be undertaken year-round. However, it would be best if you exercise caution as snow can accumulate during the winter months making the trails quite slippery.
